What comes to mind when you think about your sexual health? Sexual health goes beyond contacting diseases or practicing safe sex.

Did you know that diet plays a significant role in your sexual life and sexual health? You need energy to keep up a healthy sex drive and this is why and where sugar comes in.  Yes, sugar which consists of molecules of fructose, and one molecule of glucose, your body’s primary energy source, provides immediate energy. However, consumption of excess sugar can take a toll on your sexual health.

Our hormones don’t operate in a vacuum. They are interconnected, performing like a big musical symphony. When one becomes out of balance, others are sure to follow. Sex hormones, healthy blood sugar and insulin balance are more intimately linked than you might think.

Bad habits such as drinking and smoking, exposure to environmental toxins, and being chronically stressed all diminish sex hormone balance. Yet, the biggest culprit that continually knocks sex hormones out of balance is sugar in all its many forms. Once you understand how insulin can impact other hormones, you begin to connect the dots about how excessive sugar can wreck your sex life.

So, I bet you are wondering what effect sugar has on our sexual health.

1. Sugar lowers testosterone: In men, excessive amounts of sugar drives down testosterone, the hormone responsible for numerous functions including sexual well-being. Men with blood sugar imbalances have trouble getting or maintaining erections, as sugar is a major cause of erectile dysfunction, mostly in diabetic men. Therefore, decreased testosterone levels will directly impact your libido. Testosterone isn’t just a guy’s hormone. Imbalanced levels of this hormone in women can reduce desire, increase body fat, lower muscle mass, and create a fuzzy memory.

2. Sugar creates leptin resistance: Leptin is the hormone that tells your body when to stop eating and helps monitor sexual behaviour. Sugar creates Leptin resistance in the body, which in turn leads to a decrease in sex drive. When you eat a lot of sugar and processed foods, leptin does not work. So, now you have lower testosterone and leptin resistance. Can you begin to see how this spells trouble for your sex drive?

3. Sugar makes you tired: High amounts of sugar will create a spike and result in feeling tired. Your sex drive is negatively impacted if you are feeling tired and fatigued. Ever heard of Orexin? It is a neurotransmitter that regulates eating behaviours, wakefulness, and arousal. Amino acids (protein) increase orexin neurons and boosted alertness. Excessive sugar, on the other hand, decreased orexin, contributing to fatigue and drowsiness.

4. Sugar triggers stress and anxiety: Excessive amounts of sugar leave you tired but also wired. Why is it that you eat a big piece of chocolate cake and feel full, yet an hour later, you crave another piece?

That’s the feeling of your blood sugar crashing, leading to hunger, cravings, brain fog, and a definite not-in-the-mood feeling. Those blood sugar imbalances often trigger mood swings, depression, and anxiety.

High insulin levels also exacerbate chronically elevated levels of cortisol, your stress hormone. When the two hormones stay elevated long after they should taper down, they perform as a team to break down muscle mass, store fat, and dampen libido. Overall, that’s not a pretty picture.

Rebalancing Your Sex Hormones

If you suspect sex hormone imbalances, speak to your Doctor. Rebalancing these hormones could be as simple as what you put on your fork. Food controls your gene expression, hormones, metabolism and a lot more. Choose low-glycemic, real foods, including fresh vegetables, fruits, legumes, non-gluten grains, nuts, seeds, and high-quality animal protein.

Maximising sugar’s benefits requires balancing the healthier and less wholesome sources. Keep your eating clean and consistent throughout the day to maintain your sex drive and your energy to have more sex. Is eating candy really better than having an orgasm? You tell me.

Think of your body as a machine. You need to give it fuel in order to keep it running. Take this a step further and imagine your body is a really, really expensive machine that has sex – and if you put the shitty discount gasoline in it, you’ll mess the whole thing up, and that means less sex.

Each meal should be balanced and evenly spaced throughout the day in order to maintain a consistent energy level. Removing or reducing sugar intake will allow you to feel balanced throughout the day and will remove the chemical reaction in your body which results in decreased testosterone and increased stress.
