Overview of Air Pollution

Air pollution consists of chemicals or particles in the air that can harm the health of humans, animals, and plants. It also damages buildings. Pollutants in the air take many forms. They can be gases, solid particles, or liquid droplets.

PREVENTION OF AIR POLLUTION
Air pollution is hard to escape, regardless of the area you live in.  There are ways to prevent, control and eventually reduce air pollution indoor and outdoor. See table below:

OUTDOOR INDOOR
1. Maintain your wood stove or fireplace 1. Do not smoke indoors
2. Minimize air pollution from cars 2. Vacuum clean with a HEPA filter
3. Walk, bike or use public transportation 3. Keep indoor humidity low

 

4. Consume less & choose sustainable products 4. Clean dust
5. Save energy 5. Test your home for radon
6. Recycle & buy recycled products 6. Use essential oils

EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION
One-third of deaths from stroke, lung cancer and heart disease are due to air pollution.
The table below shows the types of health effects experienced by the most common pollutants at elevated levels:

Pollutant Health effects at very high levels
Nitrogen Dioxide, Sulphur Dioxide, Ozone These gases irritate the airways of the lungs, increasing the symptoms of those suffering from lung diseases
Particles Small particles can be carried deep into the lungs where they can cause inflammation and a worsening of heart and lung diseases
Carbon Monoxide This can lead to a significant reduction in the supply of oxygen to the heart, particularly in people suffering from heart disease
